What is parts work?

Land in the unwavering certainty of your SELF

Parts work is a framework and modality founded by Dr Richard Schwartz, wherein we separate our sense of self from the parts of the personality we’re observing. This allows us to experience our thoughts and emotions from a place of groundedness and compassion.

Who is the Self?

The Self is the essence of who we are, beneath and beyond all the parts. The natural characteristics of the Self are captured in the 8 Cs: calm, confident, curious, creative, compassionate, courageous, clear, and connected. We are always the Self, but don’t recognize ourselves as such as long as we’re identified with parts.

The more we practice parts work, the more we come to know ourselves as the Self. This is the greatest gift of this work. When we know we are not the parts, we can accept them fully. This is what they most need, and fulfilling the need means they no longer have to go about their established strategies which create painful patterns in our lives. The mind gradually becomes more quiet, there’s less inner conflict, and we begin to develop an unshakeable confidence that we will be okay no matter what happens in the world.

What actually happens in a session?

I'm here to hold the outer container, so you can go deep and hold the inner container for your parts.

We drop into a meditative state, and begin to engage with one or more parts of the mind. I will guide you in asking questions, and we will engage in a conversation with the subconscious mind. We use visualization and symbology to work with sensations, thoughts, and emotions.

We make space, collect information, offer validation, and witness the parts of the mind and any process they undergo during the session.

Key points

  1. Parts work is not an analytical process. During the session, avoid trying to figure things out (for example, by scanning our memories for reasons or explanations). Engaging with the analytical mind can keep us from going deeper. Remember that it doesn’t need to “make sense” to be effective.

  2. The state of BEing is much more important than trying to get anything done. The best thing we can offer to our inner world is presence. Sit back, relax, and open to the experience.
